Have we met?

We were recently loaned Deja Vu, an unremarkable but enjoyable enough Scott-Free production starring Denzel Washington, with support from Val Kilmer and Adam Goldberg. Being unremarkable, there's not a whole lot to say about it, but I can tell you that its much-maligned time travel theory is acceptably sound and well-explained, and that, as in all Scott-Free productions, the dialogue and interchange between most characters is wonderfully natural. Scott-Free, of course, is the company owned and run by brothers Ridley (Alien, Blade Runner, Gladiator) and Tony Scott. The company also produces Numb3rs, and I'd say Deja Vu is roughly the same quality as a good but not great episode of the former - in other words, if we'd paid to see it, I'd feel ripped off, as it was only as good as decent TV. The film was directed by Tony Scott, who has a much heavier hand than his brother; at the same time, there is some melodrama I can't fault him for - I mean, when was the last time you saw an action film go to lengths to humanize and put a face on victims of a mass crime?

On a separate note, Deja Vu is executively produced by Jerry Bruckheimer, which means that there are not one, not two, but four gratuitous female underwear shots in under twenty minutes. Oh, Jerry. You're so predictable.

If you can watch it for free, this film's a fine way to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon. Just don't spend money on it, or your disappointment will likely be significant.
